Briar and Bramble by Caitlin Hunter
Pattern: Briar and bramble
Yarn: Ginger Twist Studio Masham Mayem
The Briar and Bramble is a surprisingly quick and relaxing project. The pattern isn’t the most prescriptive, but the design is really well thought out. I especially appreciated the ribbing that flowed from the collar, down the sleeves and the sides of the body. Both ending with ribbed cuffs and hems.
I made several notes as I knit were the pattern was a little vague, for future tips when I probably make a second. To start, the yoke increases change the staggered bamboo repeats. Since the knit rows include the increases, I did not need to K1 before beginning the bamboo stitch. Similarly, the sleeve decreases change the repeats. This meant that I repeated the bamboo stitch row that I completed the row before the decrease. Finally, I found it incredibly helpful, because of the staggered bamboo stitch, to use shorties for the sleeves. Otherwise you’ll need to do a lot of stitch management on magic loop or DPNs.
I made several modifications for fit. I thought a mock turtle neck would look nice, so I knit the collar to 3 inches before I began the yoke. I am very pleased with the result. I also generally wanted a more oversized looking sweater without it being baggy so I knit the body 2 inches longer and did less sleeve decreases. For the sleeves, I waited until after the elbow to begin the decreases and then I only did four rounds of decreases.
Overall I love the finished project and would knit again. I think it would be really nice with Sonder Sunday Morning DK with a strand of mohair. It’s my new favorite sweater, its cute and really comfortable.
10/10 project, would recommend.
